James A. Pritchett, new director of the African Studies Center and Professor of Anthroplogy
James A. Pritchett received his B.A. in Anthropology from Ohio State University in 1977, his A.M. in Anthropology from Harvard University in 1984, and his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Harvard University in 1990. He has taught at Boston University, where he also served as Director of the African Studies Center. He is currently a professor of Anthropology and Director of the African Studies Center at Michigan State University. His research focuses on the coming together of tradition and modern ways in today's Africa, particularly in the ways social change is interpreted and validated according to local beliefs. He also has a strong interest in the African Diaspora and has studied communities of African-descended people in the Caribbean, Brazil and in Central and South America.
Dr. Pritchett will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2009 at the International Center on the 3rd floor.
