Summer Cooperative African
Language Institute
June 15 - August 7, 2009
Information and Guidelines
- All applications must be filled out on-line.
- Applicants must save their work before they logout from the program otherwise they
will lose it.
- SCALI is open to any participant who wants to attend as long as the relevant language can
be offered with adequate number of students and a qualified teacher.
- Prospective SCALI participants must fill out the “Express Your Interest” form to
indicate their preferred languages at SCALI; failing to fill out the form may be a cause
for not teaching a language at SCALI as decisions what to teach may have been
made on the basis of the number of language interests expressed earlier.
- Prospective SCALI participants can apply for Foreign Language and Area Studies
(FLAS) fellowship which covers tuition and stipend ( FLAS also
covers transportation to SCALI if funds are available).
- FLAS fellowship is available only to graduate students (or graduating undergraduate
students provided they have been accepted for graduate study the following fall
at an accredited academic institution).
- If an application includes request for FLAS from MSU, the deadline is Feb. 13th, 2009;
later applications for FLAS will be accepted, only if unallocated fellowship funds
are still available. AS each FLAS granting institution may have a different
deadline date, applicants need to find out this information from each institution.
- Applications that do not include request for FLAS fellowship from MSU will be accepted through
the end of May 2009.
- The Institute (SCALI) lasts for eight weeks and the intensive attendance
requires about 4.0 to 4.5 hours a day for five days a week.
- Attendance is mandatory and one has to complete the program in order
to get any academic credit. Failure to complete the program will also entail the
reimbursement to the FLAS Program of all fees/tuition
and stipend fellowship paid under FLAS to the student to attend SCALI.
- Students who enroll for Elementary/Introductory and Intermediate levels
will be registered for 8 credits; those at Advanced level will be registered for
6 credit hours.
- For those who have already attended instruction in a language, a placement test
will be administered to determine their level of proficiency.
- Reference letters or recommendations should be completed on a form
provided online, signed, and sent to the Center by ordinary (snail) mail. Unless an applicant has taken a course in the language of interest, only one recommendation letter is needed; however, if an applicant has taken the language as a course, he or she should also submit a recommendation from his language instructor.
- Each prospective participant in SCALI is required to pay $150
registration fee to cover incidental and programmatic events, (e.g.,
tours and other out of class activities).
- The SCALI tuition rates and housing information are available on the SCALI Website.
- SCALI participants are expected to abide by MSU’s academic
environment rules and regulations; failure to do so could be a cause
for expulsion from the program.
- Please note that the same MSU application form is used both for FLAS
fellowship and for SCALI attendance at MSU; thus you, need only to complete
one form.
