Africa Culture Week 2002 "Change in the Horizon: Africa Unite," is the theme for the 2002 Africa Culture Week at MSU. The annual event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 20th to Saturday, March 23rd. This year's program will focus specifically on HIV/AIDS and Women and children in Africa. Mark your calendars to attend the weekly programs, as well as the Grand Gala on Saturday. The Gala features a Production celebrating African culture, a fashion show, dinner, dances, skits, and other performances. More information will follow as the event draws closer. Refugee Services - Lansing, MI Refugee Services of Lansing is seeking motivated students for internships and volunteer positions for the summer and fall semesters of 2002. Positions include providing services such as establishing employment, assisting with school enrollment, health care, immigration, and a variety of other services for clients. Interns and volunteers must be comfortable working with non-English or limited English speakers. Fluency in another language, however, is not necessary. Interns and volunteers must be able to work efficiently in an office environment. GRANTS Grants for Field Research in Africa Cornell and Clark Atlanta Universities invite research proposals from U.S. based Ph.D. students and faculty members in economics, agricultural economics, and other closely related fields to be carried out in selected African countries. The grant is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development under Strategies and Analysis for Growth and Access (SAGA) project. The grant covers costs of travel, research related expenses (e.g., data collection) and a stipend to cover daily lodging and food ($5,000 - $20,000). The recipients of the grant will be based in one of the member countries of the Secretariat for Institutional Support for Economic Research in Africa (SISERA) during the field research period. The Gambia West Africa, St. John's University May 12 - 26, 2002 Students studying in the St. John's University in the Gambia program will be able to experience Gambian culture and learn African history first-hand. The program comprises lectures and classroom discussions on the campus of The University of The Gambia, as well as fieldtrips to cultural events and historic James Island, a visit to Alex Haley's (Roots) ancestral home ‘Juffure,' a tour of the capital city Banjul, a special performance by a hereditary praise singer known as a ‘griot', and watching some of the countries top traditional wrestlers compete in weekly matches. The theme of the Gambian experience is ‘Africa and the Atlantic', and students will receive 3 credits for a St. John's University history course by that name.
