Explore Africa at MSU
Explore Africa at MSU 2002, is a pilot program designed for a maximum of 20 academically talented high school students who would like to become immersed for six days in learning about the tremendous diversity found within the continent of Africa. This program is a cooperative venture by the African Studies Center and the Office of Gifted and Talented Education, at MSU.Much of the news that is read or heard about Africa in the press is largely negative. Explore Africa at MSU will challenge these stereotypical representations by presenting Africa in all of its rich cultural, social, economic and political diversity. Program cost is $500.00. Financial aid, up to $450.00 is available, based on documented need.
Students should meet the following requirements: Entering grade 10 or 11 in 2002/03 with a 3.5 GPA in strong academic subjects Have a desire to work in an academically challenging environment Have a positive recommendation from a current or recent teacher
Students will be accepted based on the strength of their applications. Applicants will be notified of their status within three weeks of the receipt of a completed application, which includes the following:
A completed and signed application form An official high school transcript An educator recommendation A student essay A deposit check for $50 made out to Michigan State University The application and other application materials are to be sent to: Michigan State University, Office of Gifted and Talented Programs, A Division of the Honors College, 186 Bessey Hall, East Lansing, MI 48824-1033. MSU Faculty on Editorial Board of Food Policy
Thomas Jayne (Agricultural Economics) was recently chosen to serve a five-year appointment on the Editorial Board of Food Policy. Jayne was also invited by the International Food Policy Research Institute, the World Bank and Wye College England to present, "False Promise or False Premise: The Experience of Food and Input Market Reform in Eastern and Southern Africa," co-authored with Jones Govereh (MSU), Anthony Mwanaumo (Government of Zambia), Anthony Chapoto (AEC grad student) and James Nyoro (Egerton University, Kenya). The paper, which will also be appearing in a forthcoming book, is available by contacting Jayne by email at: jayne@msu.edu.

Visitors to MSU during the month of May, 2002
- 12 women in the 2002 session of "The Internet and Women's Democratic Organizing: Promoting Civil Society and Democratic Networking in West Africa" (IWDO) from Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, and Senegal visited MSU, May 6-20, 2002.
- six visitors from the University of Mali, Rural Polytechnic Institute and Institute of Applied Research and Training (IPR/IFRA) The University's College of Agriculture and
- three Malian Colleagues working with MSU on Agricultural Market Information Systems
The women of IWDO were at MSU May 6-20. They were sponsored by the MSU African Studies Center; Office of Women and International Development; MATRIX Center for the Humane Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences OnLine; the West African Research Center (WARC); and the Institute for African Democracy in Dakar. Their project seeks to facilitate women's social and political activism and regional networking through Internet technologies. The program was made possible by a grant from the US State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs with funds from the Education for Development and Democracy (EDDI) Fund.
The visitors from the University of Mali Rural Polytechnic Institute and Institute of Applied Research and Training (IPR/IFRA) and those working with MSU on Agricultural Market Information Systems were at MSU May 6-11 and sponsored by the College of Agriculture's Department of Agricultural Economics and Institute of International Agriculture. Their visit to MSU was supported through funds from USAID/Mali provided to MSU's Food Security II Cooperative Agreement.

Marian Atta-Boahene is the Program Manager and Newsletter Editor for the Ark Foundation, which works against discrimination, abuse, violence against women and children, promotes the Human Rights and development needs of women, children, and other disadvantaged groups. She holds a BA in English and Linguistics from the University of Ghana, Legon, where she was Presenter/Producer for 2 years of "Yaa Asantewaa", a radio talk show that deals with issues of women and children.Hamida Harrison is the Acting Program Manager for"ABANTU for Development" in the West African Region which works to eradicate cultural, legal, and political obstacles for women, against gender and race discrimination, against armed conflict, and for the advancement of women's interests. She received an MA and MPA in Administration and Communication Development from State University of New York and the University of Ghana, Legon.
Sadia Chinery-Hesse is the Publicity Coordinator for the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) and Executive Member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ghana Branch. She earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with Honours from the University of London, UK.
Mali
Rokia Ba Toure is President of COFEM (Collectif des Femmes Du Mali) and an active member of Bamako Yeelen Lions Club to assist women's psychiatric services and blind student services. She received the Diplome du Cycle Superieur des Sciences et Techniques de la Documentation from the Institut National des Techniques de L'Information et de la Documentation (INTD) du Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers (CNAM) de Paris.Rita Korotomi Nader is the organizer of the Internet Communications of APLEF for training women leaders. She received a Diplome Universitaire de Technologie (D.U.T.) in computers from the Institute Universitaire de Gertion (I.U.G.).
Djingarey Ibrahim Maiga is the Human Rights and Gender Analysis Trainer and Women's Education Coordinator of the Institute for Popular Education. She received a Technical University diploma in Applied Language.
Nigeria
Uchenna Udeani is Senior Lecturer in Science Education at the University of Lagos, Nigeria where she works on Mathematics and Science education for girls. She earned a Ph.D. in Science Education/Gender Studies from the University of Negeria, Nsukka.Elsie Nwanwuri Thompson is the Nigeria Deputy Country Vice President for the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) working to improve the welfare of women and children. She is also the Project Leader for the CEDPA project "Engendering Legislative Issues" in Rivers State. She earned a L.L.B. HONS (Bachelor of Law) from Queen Mary College, University of London, England and is a member of the honourable society of Gray's Inn England.
Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau works for International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA - Abuja branch) She earned a LL.B (Hons), B.L. degree in Civil Law from Ahmadu Bellow University, Zaria, Nigeria.
Senegal
Safietou Diop is the Chairperson of COFDEF (Collectif des Femmes pour la Defense de la Famille/Women for the Defense of the Family) and the Chairperson of RSJ (Reseau Siggil Jigeen/Network for the Promotion of Women in Decision-Making Positions). She received a Diploma of Youth and Sports Inspector from the Institute of Higher Studies in Sports and Popular Education, Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar.Awa Wade is Executive Secretary and Vice-President of the African Network for the Promotion of Women Workers. She earned an Elementary School Teacher Training Diploma from the Teacher Training School for Young Women.
Marietou Dia has been the Programs and Training Coordinator for CRESP (Resource Center for the Emergence of Social Participation) in Senegal. She currently works as a consultant in a Senegalese project titled Promotion and Reinforcement of Women's Rights in Senegal. She received a Master of Arts (Languages) in English Civilization and Literature from the University

Dr. Breatedeau holds a doctorate in agronomy and plant breeding from the University of Science and Technology of Languedoc (Montpellier, France). Dr. Coulibaly heads IPR/IFRA's Department of Social and Economic Sciences. He holds a doctorate in Philology from the State University of Kouban (Russia). is director of Mali's agricutural market information system (Observatoire du Marchéé Agricole, or Agricultural Market Watch). This innovative program, recently dubbed by Forbes magazine as"Silicon Mali", provides farmers, traders, consumers, and policy makers throughout Mali with real-time information on agricultural market conditions. Mr. Diarra
holds an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from MSU.Mr. Abdramane Traoréé
is Research Associate at PASIDMA, a technical support project to Mali's market information system. PASIDMA is jointly implemented by MSU's Department of Agricultural Economics and the Malian Chamber of Agriculture. Mr. Traoréé is a statistician and economist who has worked in the design and implementation of agricultural statistics and information systems for 20 years.Mr. Harouna Konéé
