Undergraduate
Beginning in fall 2006, students can take a new major in Global and Area Studies (GLAS) with a concentration in African Studies. The GLAS major in the College of Social Science can be a primary major or a second major along with a disciplinary major.
The African Studies Center also offers a Specialization in Africa Studies that appears on students’ official transcript.
Social science and humanities Integrative Studies courses about Africa introduce students to the cultures, societies, and history of the continent. Africa-related courses are taught regularly in history, anthropology, political science, economics, arts and letters, music, other departments, and James Madison College.
Language instruction is available to undergraduates in Arabic, Swahili, Hausa, and Amharic.
Semester and full-year study abroad programs are available in Egypt, Senegal, and South Africa, in addition to summer programs in Ghana, Kenya, Mali, and South Africa.
The ASC and other units on campus offer many extra-curricular events about Africa, including the Thursday Brown Bag speakers series; film showings; the weekly “Hausa table” for lunch-time conversation; and the African Culture Festival, a major cultural event each year organized by the African Students Union.
